Start with a clear product request

Many sourcing problems start because the buyer request is too vague. Before contacting suppliers, prepare product photos, specifications, target quantity, target price, sales market, certification needs, and packaging requirements.

If you only ask for a price, different suppliers may quote based on different assumptions. That makes comparison almost useless.

Do not judge by price only

The lowest quote may come from cheaper material, simpler packaging, higher MOQ, different trade terms, or a supplier trying to attract attention first. Compare the conditions behind the price.

  • What material and specification does the price include?
  • Is packaging included?
  • What is the MOQ?
  • Can the supplier provide samples?
  • Does the lead time fit your sales plan?

Check the supplier's reply quality

Reliable suppliers usually confirm details instead of only sending a vague price. A supplier who explains differences, asks practical questions, and confirms sample and packaging details is usually worth continuing with.

Test step by step before a larger order

For a new supplier, avoid placing a large order too early. A safer path is to screen 3-5 suppliers, compare quotes and terms, then use samples or a small test order to judge quality and cooperation.

When should you get help screening suppliers?

If Chinese communication is difficult, the China supply chain is unfamiliar, quotes are hard to judge, or the product involves samples, packaging, certification, or customization, a sourcing agent can reduce costly mistakes.
